Steel White Table - “Best” Movie Director
Movies (Hollywood) are a worst 90 minutes of blantant and overt advertising for what your life and what products you should use and at best are mindnumbing entertainments with the only thought processes revolving around how many arses this project will put in theater seats.
While I disagree that Spielberg “is only a craftsman”, it’s highly problematic to compare directors from different eras.
You wanna talk visionaries, there you have one!

Seattle Weekly: Arts: Best of Seattle 2005: Best Crossover Director by Steve Wiecking
He's gone to every opening night with me for 22 years, and he deserves to be thanked.
The imagination and ambitiousness of Linda Hartzell have made Seattle Children's Theatre one of the city's most reliable venues for resourceful stagecraft—any place that manages to turn the monosyllabic pleasures of a picture book like Go, Dog.

Posted by: Bombadil at June 2, 2005 09:13 AM Lucas is a crap director.
Spielberg is right up there as is Scott, Lucas, Coppala, and even Scorsese but all have plenty of cheesy movies..

Not only did he have the strongest track record (Secrets of a Successful Marriage, Homer Badman, Lisa's Wedding, Bart Sells His Soul), but the show declined considerably when he left to run "King of the Hill".
And Lauren MacMullan's done incredible things in an era where animation hasn't been the show's strongest asset.

Using his native Taipei as a backdrop, Tsai distills the complexity and alienation of city life into films that are austere, unhurried and emotional, but also comical.
For a supposed director of art films, he's more interested in the world out on the street, or in the gutter.
Bowling for Columbine has been one of the most influential films of recent years, affecting the public in a way that most directors on this list will never know, but it would never have become such a cause had it not been so rigorously researched, painstakingly constructed and broadly entertaining.

 Oscar Best Director & Picture
Co-writer of the script, hands on with every technical aspect and special effect (including the creation of several processes that are now used by other film-makers), it seems implausible to imagine anyone but Jackson and his Hobbits walking away with Oscar.
Despite being touted early in 2003 as the movie to beat, the film fell short of theater expectations.
Hollywood loves Clint and with nominations for Brian Helgeland’s script adaptation, a Best Actor nod for Sean Penn, Best Supporting nods for Marcia Gay Harden and the already award winning Tim Robbins, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see Clint ride into the sunset with his second directorial Oscar.

The Michigan Daily -- 114 Years of Editorial Freedom - Despite worthy contenders, Jackson will snag Best Director
Beautifully shot and painstakingly detailed, Weir captures the feeling of life on the high seas.
Her mastery of evoking feelings of loss and love resonate in “Lost in Translation,” which may be because of the semi-autobiographical slant the story takes.
The films range from emotionally gripping drama, high-seas adventure, violent tales of the underworld, journeys to a foreign land and a final trip to Middle Earth.

Worst Oscar Snub Submission: I still am wondering why Stanley Kubrick never won Best Director
He moved to England where he shot most of his movies.
The problem with his films is that they were all made the same year as many other great movies.
Comments: Kubrick's two acknowledged masterpieces, "Dr. Strangelove" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" were both beaten by big Hollywood musicals, a particular weakness of the old guard during the 60s.

I became intrigued by what the director did primarily because when I was working on the show -- The Andy Griffith Show -- the actors were were a blast.

Clint Eastwood wins best director Oscar for Million Dollar Baby : HindustanTimes.com
In my old age, I'm looking for things that interest me a little more."
He is renowned for his relaxed directorial style and movie trademarks, including the gritty and often dark themes of his films, the working-class backgrounds of his protagonists and a freeze frame after the last scene over which the credits roll.
The movie is not as much about boxing, he says, as it is about the relationship between Swank's character and her ageing trainer, played by Eastwood.

cannabisnews.com: Steven Soderbergh Wins Best Director Oscar
Soderbergh, 38, burst onto the movie scene with 1989's highly regarded independent movie "sex, lies and videotape," and largely spurned the major Hollywood studios in favor of indie freedom until 1998's "Out of Sight."
The conventional wisdom was that one picture would end up taking votes away from the other when it came time for members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to cast their votes.
That scenario played itself out at the Golden Globes, in which Soderbergh was nominated for best director for both "Brockovich" and "Traffic" and lost out to Lee for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

Meirelles' nom is similar to last year when Almodovar fell into the Top 5.

2002 Best Director and Best Picture Picks
Polanski’s film is truly a spectacle and one of the very best films of the year.
This film ended up high on my top 10 films of 2002 and had me in awe when I first saw it.
The film is one of the most visually spectacular films of its kind to be released, and while there may be small problems with it, I had such an emotional attachment to the film that I think it was the best film of the year.

Few directors besides this master craftsman could create such a visually splendid ode to an era, to a man and his mystery and to the essence of American ingenuity and gumption with this much class and style.
Oscar usually goes for big, when sometimes the smallest, sweetest, subtlest choice would in fact be the most honorable choice.
"Vera Drake" was the best film I saw last year, a nod ahead of "Sideways." I don't recall the last time I was as emotionally involved in a film, and as separated from the world around me as I was while taking in this story.
