 Horror
The earliest horror-themed feature films were created by German filmmakers in the early 1900s; the most enduring of these is probably F. Murnau's Nosferatu 1922, the first vampire-themed feature.
Early Hollywood dramas dabbled in horror themes including versions of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) and The Monster (1925) (both starring Lon Chaney, the first American horror-film movie star).
What is it about horror that is making us walk out of the smug comfort of our homes to sit for three long hours in the darkened halls only to have our nerves frayed?

Milwaukee TV Horror Hosts Home Crypt
The show featured an incredible collection of horror films, and was the only one in Milwaukee once WITI-TV dropped "Nightmare Theatre" in October of 1977.
First these were a single feature, but the show was switched to a double feature for a year, before again being switched back to a single.
Sponsored by American TV and Appliances, the show was first called "Ferdie’s Inferno" after the store’s owner, Ferd Mattioli.

The slasher lite craze has kept the once entertaining David DeCocteau releasing tons of imitators to this day (many with a homoerotic slant, which is a little different, but still packed into lousy movies).
What is a surprise is that so far, they haven't found a director with the guts to film it.
But horror fans were a tad upset when Andrew was not brought on for the prequel, since many deemed him a fine Leatherface.

With a boxy forehead and neck electrodes (and other features created from Whale's sketches by make-up artist Jack Pierce), Karloff's poignant portrayal of the pathetic created Monster's plight gave a personality to the outcast, uncomprehending character with a lumbering and lurching gait.
Horror films are also known as chillers, scary movies, spookfests, and the macabre.
The unsettling film, Dreyer's first sound feature, was loosely based on a collection of horror stories (In a Glass Darkly (1972) written by Sheridan Le Fanu).

 Memento Vivere :: Horror
I don't know; perhaps my views are skewed because I'm not a big horror fan.
Horror is still very much under-appreciated as a book genre, in my opinion, but the popularity of it in the visual media is making me a bit worried that just as horror is taking off again it might be, well, done to death in the public's eye before it really has a chance to shine.
So anyway, do the trends in Horror movie popularity (lots of big budget horror film) track with popularity of Horror on the bookshelves?

The Blair Witch Project provoked strong, and varied, reactions from its audiences.
It's this device that ensures that The Blair Witch Project will survive, not only as a great horror film, but also as an organic criticism of a generation raised on television, a generation that seems to only experience reality through a lens piece, screen, or tube.
That buried statement is the true legacy of this exceptional movie.

Horror fiction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since the 1960s, any work of fiction with a morbid, gruesome, surreal, exceptionally suspenseful or frightening theme has come to be called "horror".
Modern horror fiction found its roots in the gothic novels that exploded into popularity in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, typified by Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho and Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto.
Fictional characters have found themselves in horrifying situations from the earliest recorded tales.

The book is filled with short to medium length reviews of horror films from every period in film history (up to 1992) and every nation which dabbles in the genre.
I bought the first edition of this book back in 1985 and although I've bought a lot of other book on cinema and horror since then, this has to be the most valuable of them all.
Combine these strengths with the inclusion of just about every horror film ever made and you have a book horror fans will leave by their bedside.
